Discover the magic of Sillustani and Lake Titicaca on this enriching one day adventure. This tour blends ancient history, natural beauty, and unique cultural encounters. Located just outside of Puno, it takes you to the fascinating Chullpas de Sillustani. These pre-Incan funerary towers rise beside the serene waters of Lake Umayo. Built by the Colla people, these stone structures hold centuries of Andean mystery. In fact, Sillustani, a name believed to mean “the place of the grave” in Quechua, offers a powerful introduction to the region’s ancestral legacy. Next, you will navigate the highest navigable lake in the world, Lake Titicaca, which is steeped in legends and traditions. Here, you will visit the incredible Uros floating islands, made entirely of totora reeds. Meeting the Uros people offers rare insight into a lifestyle shaped by water, wind, and resilience. Additionally, you will learn about the history of Lake Titicaca and why it is called the cradle of Andean civilization. Considerations: Sillustani and Lake Titicaca High altitude awareness: Both Sillustani and Lake Titicaca sit at over 3,800 meters (12,500 feet) above sea level. If you’re not acclimated yet, take it slow, stay hydrated, and avoid heavy meals beforehand. Walking surfaces: The chullpas area in Sillustani has uneven terrain. Comfortable walking shoes are essential, and while the tour is suitable for most people, those with reduced mobility may find some sections challenging. Weather changes: The high altitude climate can shift quickly. Bring a light jacket or raincoat, even on sunny days. Cash for extras: Some local crafts or optional activities on the Uros Islands may require cash, as card payments are usually not accepted. Sun protection: The high elevation increases UV exposure, so don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brim hat. Advantages: Rich cultural immersion in one day: In just a few hours, you’ll uncover the mysteries of Sillustani’s chullpas, learn why they wer...

FAQ

You’ll start before sunrise to admire the ancient Chullpas de Sillustani, those grand stone towers at 3,940 m. Then, relax on a 6 km boat ride to the floating reed islands of the Uros, where life on Lake Titicaca comes alive. Your guide will weave in history and traditions throughout the day. If you’re curious about glacier-fed lakes, consider pairing this trip with Humantay Lake.

Not at all. The route features gentle walks on mostly flat ground and plenty of rest stops. We do suggest spending a night in Puno beforehand to acclimatize and trying coca tea to ease any altitude effects. For a bigger challenge, check out the multi day Lares Trek.

The dry season from May to September offers clear skies and calm waters, ideal for photographs and boat rides. April and October still have good weather with fewer crowds. If dramatic mountain hues intrigue you, consider adding Rainbow Mountain.

We gather at Puno’s main plaza at 7 AM. Look for our vehicle waiting near the fountain. There’s no shuttle needed: Just show up, and we’ll handle the rest. To continue exploring urban history afterward, ask about booking Cusco City.

Definitely. Kids love spotting birds and exploring the reed islands like mini adventurers. Short walks and engaging stories keep them entertained. For more family friendly options, see our Machu Picchu full day trip.

Sillustani sits at 3,940 m and Lake Titicaca at 3,812 m, so mild headaches or breathlessness can happen. Drink plenty of water, eat light meals, and try coca tea to help. If you’d like a softer introduction, consider our Colca Canyon day trip for gradual acclimatization.

The crossing is about 6 km and takes roughly 30 – 40 minutes. On the islands, you’ll meet the Uros people, learn about their reed building traditions, and see how they’ve thrived here for generations. If you crave more coastal vibes, explore Máncora and Punta Sal.

Dress in layers: mornings can be crisp, the sun strong at midday, and evenings cool. Bring sturdy shoes, a light jacket, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, refillable water bottle, and a snack. Don’t forget your camera! For a full packing guide, visit Short Inca Trail.

Restrooms are available at the Sillustani visitor center and on the Uros Islands. Connectivity is limited, mobile signal is patchy and there’s no Wi-Fi, so download any maps or playlists beforehand. For better connectivity by the sea, see Máncora and Punta Sal.

As the world’s highest navigable lake, Titicaca holds a special place in Andean creation myths and supported ancient civilizations for millennia. On the Uros Islands, you’ll learn these legends firsthand. For more deep dives into Inca heritage, try the Choquequirao trek.

Each experience shines on its own, but you can do Sillustani and Lake Titicaca one day and Machu Picchu or the Short Inca Trail on separate days. Let us know your dates, and we’ll help plan the perfect sequence.

We recommend reserving at least two weeks ahead, especially during high season (June to August) when availability decreases. If you have multiple adventures in mind, lock in this tour first, then add options like Lares or Humantay Lake to complete your itinerary.
