Exploring Lesser Known Routes: Choquequirao
Choquequirao is located in Cusco, and Cusco is home to countless routes that connected the Inca Empire.
There are main roads or routes that are part of the Qapaq Ñam system and alternate routes that connected to more secret places, such as Machu Picchu and Choquequirao.
Having this sophisticated system of roads was also counterproductive for our Inca ancestors, because due to the great connection that was had in the Tahuantinsuyo.
The Spanish invaders managed to reach Cusco without much effort, they only had to follow the Qapaq Ñam and reached Cusco, we must remember that all the roads of the Tahuantinsuyo reached Cusco, either the Contisuyo, Antisuyo, Chinchaysuyo and Collasuyo.
Why is it called Choquequirao?
Whatever the name comes from the Quechua words, Chuqi which means gold and K’iraw which means cradle, so the name Choquequirao means “Cradle of gold”, it was built during the mandate of the Inca Pachacutec.
Why is Choquequirao said to be the brother of Machu Picchu?
Many historians find a lot of similarity between both structures, it is not surprising that this happens, since they are really almost identical and not only structurally but also by the shape and the place where they were built, as well as the strategic location of both buildings.

Moreover, according to local stories, Choquequirao was the refuge of the last Incas after the invaders arrived. From here, they planned resistance against the Spanish, though unsuccessfully. How long does the trek take?
So the exciting trek to Choquequirao usually takes approximately four days, including both the outward and return journey from Cachora, the starting point of this challenging trek.
However, the duration may vary depending on the pace of the group, the experience of the hikers and the weather conditions.
This trek requires a good physical condition, as it involves steep trails, altitude changes and long daily hikes. It is recommended to plan at least four full days to enjoy the landscape, biodiversity and majesty of this archaeological site.
Essential equipment for trekking:
- Proper footwear: Sturdy trekking boots, preferably waterproof and with good grip to avoid slipping on uneven terrain.
